Cosplay & Photo-Ops
Join the most vibrant part of Comic-Con! Whether you're in full armor, closet cosplay, or just rocking a themed tee, you're part of the scene. Here's how to navigate cosplay and photo-ops at SDCC like a pro.
Cosplay Etiquette: Respect & Kindness First
- Always ask before touching or photographing someone, no matter how amazing their costume is.
- Cosplay is not consent. Compliments are welcome, creepy behavior is not.
- Offer encouragement! New cosplayers may feel nervous, and positivity makes a huge difference.
- Don't block the flow of traffic to get a photo. Step to the side, and be quick and courteous.
Cosplayer Tips
- Comfort is key: Prepare and test your costume for sunny, long days. San Diego temperatures in late July hover around 75-85 °F (24-30 °C). Opt for layers or breathable fabrics.
- Plan for crowds: The convention halls and seating areas get tight – bulky, sharp, or massive accessories will get in the way. Wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes to protect your feet.
- Pack an emergency kit: Safety pins, fashion tape, and extra makeup can save the day. Pre-made repair kits are also available online.
- Know the prop rules: SDCC has a strict prop weapons policy. Everything must be peace-bonded and followofficial safety guidelines.
Photo-Ops & Meet-ups
Fandom meet-ups happen all weekend – our updated list of photo-ops with group links is available here! Meet-ups are scheduled both at the convention centre and off-site, so a badge may be required for access. The Mezzanine and the surrounding outdoor areas are popular spots.
- Follow hashtags like #SDCCCosplay or community boards like the Unofficial SDCC Blog, Reddit, or Facebook cosplay groups for real-time meet-up announcements.
Cosplay Contests & More
- SDCC hosts a Masquerade Costume Contest on Saturday night, open to all cosplayers. Competitors must register in advance.
- Follow your favorite brands and artists on social media for contests happening live on the show floor.
- Watch the convention schedule for announcements of panels! Learn building techniques, makeup tips, prototyping strategies, and more.
